As soon as the time machine is in the past, whatever had happened has and people in the present won't know what it was. So if they go back with the lifeboat they would not know how it originally would have taken place.

Also there's no reason why the time machines would come back days later than they left. The time spent in the past doesn't influence what time they come back to.
